Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has met with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Sowore, who made the revelation on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, said the meeting focused on finding a peaceful and just resolution to Kanu’s continued incarceration.
“Earlier today in Abuja, I met with former President Goodluck Jonathan to discuss the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Sowore wrote. “President Jonathan agreed that it is urgent and necessary to resolve this issue fairly, in the interest of peace and national unity.”
Sowore further disclosed that Jonathan expressed willingness to engage President Bola Tinubu on the matter, assuring him that the case required decisive attention to promote reconciliation and national healing.
The activist also renewed his call for leaders from the South-East—including governors, senators, and traditional rulers—to participate in efforts pushing for Kanu’s release. He mentioned reaching out to key Igbo figures such as Peter Obi, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to join what he described as a nationwide movement for justice.
“It’s time for genuine action,” Sowore stated. “Every governor, senator, traditional ruler, priest, and citizen who believes in fairness should stand up for Kanu’s freedom.”
Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also joined the growing calls for Kanu’s release, describing his continued detention as a violation of the rule of law.
Kanu, who faces charges of treasonable felony, terrorism, and incitement before the Federal High Court in Abuja, has consistently denied all allegations. Despite several court orders granting him bail, he remains in custody.
As the conversation around Kanu’s fate continues, Sowore’s engagement with Jonathan signals a renewed push for dialogue and political intervention aimed at restoring trust, justice, and unity in Nigeria.
