Beijing has sharply criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to impose a 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods, calling it a dangerous move that could worsen the ongoing China tariff dispute and disrupt global trade stability.
In a statement released on Saturday, China’s Ministry of Commerce warned that Trump’s remarks were “irresponsible” and showed a lack of understanding of international trade rules. The ministry emphasized that such aggressive measures would harm both U.S. consumers and global supply chains, rather than achieving economic fairness.
Responding to questions about its recent export controls on rare earth materials, Beijing defended the move, saying it was based on national security concerns and the need to ensure sustainable resource management. Rare earth elements are critical components used in electronics, defense systems, and electric vehicles — areas where China remains a global leader.
“Our actions are transparent and lawful,” the ministry said. “China has always promoted open cooperation, but it will firmly safeguard its national interests amid the ongoing China tariff dispute.”
Analysts say Trump’s renewed rhetoric could further heighten tensions between the world’s two largest economies, especially if he returns to power. During his presidency, Trump had already imposed heavy tariffs on Chinese imports, triggering a trade war that affected markets worldwide.
Trade experts believe that China’s strong response signals its readiness to defend its policies and maintain control over key industries like rare earth mining and processing. They also warn that escalating the China tariff dispute could destabilize fragile global supply chains and increase production costs for major U.S. manufacturers.
As both sides trade words, observers note that the latest exchange underscores the fragile balance between economic rivalry and cooperation that continues to define U.S.–China relations.
