In what many have dubbed the Edo land scandal, a 17-year-old boy from Edo State has stunned the public by allegedly purchasing 14,000 hectares of land with a full cash payment. The transaction, which has raised serious questions, has now prompted a swift reaction from the state government.
Governor Orders Full Investigation
Governor Monday Okpebholo has directed an immediate probe into the teenager’s mysterious land purchase, describing it as “highly unusual and suspicious.” Speaking during a meeting with members of the Shift Naija Initiative in Benin City, the governor said the investigation will uncover how a minor could afford such an enormous property deal.
“We are committed to transparency in land matters. The investigation into this Edo land scandal will reveal the source of the boy’s wealth and ensure due process is followed,” Okpebholo stated.
To prevent further irregularities, the governor announced a temporary suspension of Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O) issuance across the state, saying it’s part of a broader plan to clean up land transactions and block fraudulent acquisitions.
Payment Trail Under Scrutiny
Reports indicate that the land, equivalent to more than 34,000 acres, cuts across several local government areas. The teenager reportedly made the entire payment upfront—without any bank loan or installment—sparking concerns about possible money laundering.
The Edo State Ministry of Lands and Surveys, in collaboration with financial intelligence agencies, has begun tracing the payment trail to determine the source of the funds. Legal analysts have suggested that the transaction could be investigated under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, which requires that large cash payments be reported, especially when minors are involved.
