Global Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage has voiced her frustration over what she sees as a lack of recognition for her lasting influence on the Nigerian and African music scene.
Speaking in a candid interview on the Off Air Show, the award-winning artist admitted she feels underappreciated despite her pioneering role in taking Afrobeats to international stages.
“I don’t get enough credit for what I’ve done,” Tiwa Savage said frankly when asked if she believes she has received her due recognition. “I’m sorry, but I haven’t received my flowers yet.”
Known for breaking global barriers and headlining sold-out concerts around the world, Tiwa emphasized that her achievements are often overlooked in an industry that tends to give more attention to her male counterparts.
She expressed disappointment that years of hard work and groundbreaking accomplishments haven’t always translated into the recognition she deserves. “Sometimes, comparisons and criticism drown out genuine appreciation, especially for women in the entertainment industry,” she said.
Despite her feelings of being underappreciated, Tiwa Savage praised fellow African artists who continue to push Afrobeats to new heights. She highlighted the likes of Ayra Starr, Tems, and Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz as musicians making Africa proud on the global stage.
The multiple award-winning singer, often referred to as the “Queen of Afrobeats,” said her hope is that the next generation of female artists will enjoy the respect and admiration that has sometimes eluded her.
“I’m proud of how far we’ve come as African artists,” she added. “I just want to see more women celebrated for their impact without having to fight for acknowledgment.”
