The Chinese government has issued a strong warning to U.S. President Donald Trump over what it described as unwarranted interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, following reports that Washington was considering possible military action against the West African nation.
Trump had earlier announced that Nigeria would be placed on the U.S. Department of State’s watchlist for religious freedom, alleging that Christians in the country were being “slaughtered” by Muslims.
In a post last Friday, he said his administration was preparing to respond “swiftly” to the situation, adding on Sunday that he was reviewing a range of military options.
Responding at a press conference on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, cautioned Trump against any such move and reaffirmed Beijing’s support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
She emphasized that China stands by Nigeria as it continues on “a development path suited to its national conditions,” stressing that external pressure or military threats could undermine peace and stability in the region.
