The Kwara State Fire Service has confirmed that a fire outbreak on Thursday afternoon gutted five classrooms at CSM Nursery and Primary School, located along Muyideen College of Education Road, Kulende Estate Phase 3, Ilorin.
In a statement signed by the Head of Media and Publicity for the Director of the Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, firefighters arrived at the scene to find a 15-classroom building engulfed in flames.
Their swift intervention, however, prevented the fire from spreading beyond the five affected classrooms.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a student who was cooking inside one of the classrooms converted into a hostel and left the stove unattended, leading to ignition of nearby combustible materials.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, cautioned against cooking inside hostels or unauthorized areas, warning that negligence with heat sources remains a major cause of avoidable fire incidents.
He urged parents, school authorities, and guardians to discourage such risky behavior and advised the public to promptly alert the Fire Service in any emergency to minimize damage and loss.
