The Federal Government, through the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has apologized to passengers and stakeholders following a power outage at Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) over the weekend.
The agency attributed the disruption to a fault in the terminal’s changeover circuit during a power transition process.
FAAN said its technical teams were immediately deployed to transfer electricity supply to the secondary grid, while backup measures were activated to restore services as quickly as possible. The outage briefly affected airport operations and caused inconvenience to travelers.
In a statement on its official X account, FAAN expressed regret for the disruption, apologizing to all passengers and stakeholders for any discomfort caused and assuring the public that corrective measures were implemented to prevent a recurrence.
“We acknowledge the power outage at MMIA Terminal 1 yesterday. The interruption was caused by an issue with the changeover circuit,” the statement reads.
“Our teams took immediate action to bridge the gap and transfer supply to the secondary grid, and interim backup measures were activated to restore services as quickly as possible. We apologise to all passengers and stakeholders affected by the disruption and any discomfort it caused.”
“While we continue to implement measures to mitigate such events, Terminal 1 has long‑standing infrastructure limitations.”
“As we prepare to shut down Terminal 1 in one month as part of the MMIA Rehabilitation and Expansion Project, it is not feasible to install permanent new or additional backup equipment at this time. We appreciate your patience as we transition from stop‑gap solutions to lasting improvements. We remain committed to delivering a safer, more reliable passenger experience.”
